The Havanese is truly one of the most delightful of the small breeds. They are exceptionally intelligent and quick-witted. Obedience training is achieved with very little effort. Fast to learn and anxious to please, they are a charming, open-hearted breed with nothing sly or mean in their makeup. They thrive their very best when participating as a member of the family. They love children and will play tirelessly with them at any game. Havanese are powerful swimmers and love playing in the water, diving in and out like tiny seals.
When you bring your puppy home he will look to you for the comfort and protection he felt with his mother and littermates. Everything is new to him, so give him time to get acquainted. Treat him gently. Loud noises, sudden grabs, etc. can frighten puppies. Have a place ready for him. His bed should be a crate put in an out-of-the-way place where he can feel secure and observe some of the household activity.
I think it is always good to respect the puppy's right to be undisturbed when-ever he seeks his bed for a rest and when he is eating his meals. Talk to him. He won't understand a word at this point, but your friendly tone of voice will help to give him confidence. Now that you are hopefully taking one of these darlings home, you can set the pattern of his life so he will thrive and grow and learn......That is what I hope for you and your new Havanese from our Hacienda.
